Basic Food, Employment and Training Program (BFET)
To apply for Basic Food assistance, visit the Department of Social and Health Services' Basic Food website.
Find out whether you qualify for the Basic Food, Education and Training Program at Start Next Quarter. If your college is not on the list, contact the college directly.
If you have questions about financial aid, call the financial aid office at the college of your choice.

Employment and Training for Students Who Receive Food Assistance
Are you receiving basic food assistance? The Basic Food Employment and Training (BFET) program can help you get the training you need for a better paying job and economic security. The program is a partnership between the Department of Social and Health Services, community and technical colleges, and community-based organizations.
Eligibility
You may qualify if:
- You receive or are eligible to receive food assistance, which in Washington state is called Basic Food. Some people refer to it by the general name "food stamps."
- You are not receiving TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families). People who receive TANF get training through a different program called WorkFirst.
Services
Services vary depending on the college you attend. You may receive:
- Tuition assistance
- Personal career assessment and planning
- Case management and employment plans
- Support services for school supplies, books, childcare, housing, utilities, personal hygiene, medical/dental/vision, clothing, tools and other job-related expenses
- Job search assistance and employment retention services
