If the system’s operating budget request of $353 million is fully funded, Bates Technical College will receive approximately $5.4 million in additional funding.

If the system’s request is fully funded, Bates Technical College will receive approximately $5,434,000 for operation, maintenance, infrastructure, repairs and minor improvements of its existing facilities, $38,135,000 for construction of the Fire Services Training Center, and $29,929,000 for design and construction of the Student Success Center.

Bates Technical College enriches our diverse communities by inspiring student learning, challenging greater achievement, and educating for employment.  

The college annually serves approximately 3,000 career training students and 10,000 more community members on three campuses in programs such as Continuing Education, Child Studies, High School, General Education and Basic Studies, and others.

Bates’ classroom settings mirror the workplace, providing students with opportunities to practice and develop skills to levels required for successful employment. Bates offers two-year associate of applied science degrees, certificates of competency, certificates of training, industry certifications and, in specific programs, prepares students for the achievement of state licensure. Additionally, Bates just got approved to offer it's first Bachelor's degree in Public Safety Administration in Winter of 2025. The college maintains articulation degrees with several four-year universities, making some of the college’s two-year degrees transferable.

Meet Cajetan Martin

Hawaiian native Cajetan Martin knew his life goal was to make a positive impact, whether big or small. This led him to join the Army, serving six years as a medic. Now a member of the National Guard, Cajetan is pursuing a fire service degree. He hopes to continue making an impact, but on a smaller scale. The memory of the soldiers he served with who made the ultimate sacrifice drives his motivation to succeed, noting that he owes it to them to give 100% of everything he does.

Legislative Priority: Expand Opportunity for Students and Employers

Fully funding our budget requests will have real returns for students like Cajetan Martin and for the communities and employers in our area. Students will learn from competitively-paid experts who choose to work at Bates Technical College rather than pursue higher paying positions with private employers or K-12 schools. Our students will train for careers in robust workforce programs, with modern equipment and learning spaces that mirror their future work environments. We will be able to expand technology to bring a college education to more people in more ways, which is especially important for working adults. And, all our students will benefit from an inclusive environment where they are valued, supported and equipped to reach their goals.

Bates Technical College will also receive funding to operate and maintain existing facilities and to design and build both its Fire Services Training Center and Student Success Center.
